-My students need various supplies for the science unit, including: 9 packs of paper cups, 5 lbs of marine sand, 5 lbs of marine pebbles, 16 qts of potting soil,200 plastic spoons, 10 cans of shaving cream, 50 packages of play-dough, 8 bottles of food coloring, 500 toothpicks, 10 boxes of sugar cubes and 4 tubs of Twizzlers.
My classroom is one of constant hands on activities to encourage all learning styles to flourish in our classroom. I teach 5th grade, all subject areas (self-contained). My classroom tends to be made up of students who typically enjoy and need more hands on activities to help with their learning styles. My classroom is a pilot type program for our grade level within our school.
One major Science concept in 5th grade is Oceans and Landforms. The materials that I have requested go along with our district's curriculum activities that are suggested as incorporated lessons in our classrooms. With today's economic crisis parents who have always been able to help provide extras can not any longer. This has forced me to look even harder for outside resources.
Last year I was able to complete most of these activities with my students during this unit. The test scores for this unit were the highest out of the 4 units that we teach and I fully believe it was because of the extent of the hands on activities that I used in my classroom. There are many materials listed, but it goes over the course of a 9 week teaching period from building shaving cream land form samples, to using the play dough to build the ocean floor.
Your generosity will help my students to go above and beyond the pencil, paper and book learning that many students get. You will make it possible for them to truly get the chance to think outside of the box. Thank you in advance for your time and help.
