Making Their Mark in the Literacy World!

Help me give my students an opportunity to increase and strengthen their reading skills through engaging text that they can interact with using a variety of strategies such as text marking.

My Students

Students in our class give a concentrated effort to stay focused on reaching their expected goals despite challenging home life distractions that follow their thoughts to school. They find the grounding in the support of others (peers and staff) at school that helps them strengthen their confidence in themselves.

The students are generally respectful of others and are continually discovering the heights cooperative learning at school can take them.

These experiences have led students to push their goals higher than they initially envisioned. Given the opportunity to discover their capabilities the students often search for new growth in learning!

My Project

Being able to interact and respond with engaging text provides our students, particularly our English language learners, with opportunities to dive deep into the many perspectives literacy offers. Scholastic magazines provide current and relevant topics that provide a rich variety of genres that students eagerly read and share.

Students will use text marking strategies such as underlining and circling essential evidence that will help them analyze the text.

They will have an opportunity to stop and jot their critical thinking during their reading that they can then share with their peers in literacy discussions. Students will have the opportunity to keep and take home the text to revisit their thinking with family and in turn, reinforce comprehension retention and language acquisition.
