Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are an eclectic mix of scientifically interested individuals. Whether they have taken chemistry in the past or are just interested in possibilities of the subject, these students want the answers to the "why?" questions of how our world works.
Many students join chemistry club because they have had a positive experience in the sciences and want to see whats possible.
Some students have no idea what to expect when they enter the room, some have experiments they would like to try, and some want to experience a laboratory setting and get hands-on with science. All students come from drastically different circumstances, some good and some bad, but in this club they have found a common footing...they are engaged, they are invested and everyone is included.
My Project
The students in our chemistry club need some seriously updated equipment like beakers, a hotplate, a blender, and a digital scale. In Chemistry Club, students are given the opportunity to apply knowledge learned in the classroom to create a product. In our case, students create a high quality organic soap. The idea was formed by chemistry students some years ago, at which time there were no science oriented clubs at our school. These students were all interested in doing chemistry related activities outside of the classroom. Students brought to our attention that this would be a fun and educational experience that could involve the school community and also our town. To date, we have developed over ten different scents, using organic vegetable oils with essential and other fragrance oils for scents. We then sell the organic soap to raise funds for laboratory equipment and additional student activities (demos, experiments and investigations).
This club was originally put together on a shoestring budget consisting of donated materials that students brought from home.
While the club is generally able to be financially self sufficient, over time, wear-and-tear and the harsh chemicals have taken their toll on virtually all of our equipment. The nice wood molds that students made have started to disintegrate. It is time to upgrade and improve. The materials I am requesting will allow us to continue making our product while also alleviating the wear and tear associated with less desirable materials. This will also allow more time to invest in explorations in chemistry. A large portion of our club time has been dedicated to making sure our equipment will work- mixing 20 pounds of soap is not fun when your immersion blender falls apart.
