My students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. They are like blank canvases ready to be filled with hues of all that learning has to offer them.
My students' abilities and future outcomes are often times pre-determined by their zip code and I want them to know that their struggles and circumstances are only stepping stones for them to step into their greatness.
I teach in a Title I school where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Despite so many hardships and the hand that they have been dealt, my students are eager to learn about the world in which they live and how they can make it better for generations to come.
We are in the process of becoming a STEM school and exposing our students to engineering opportunities that they never thought were possible has been a thrilling experience. Students are learning more and more about the world and how they can be change agents of the future. Because of the urban community in which I serve, our focus is Environmental Science and Engineering. It is my goal as the K-5 STEM teacher to give my students the chance to grow urban gardens, design and create energy efficient alternatives and discover how pollutants destroy the community in which we live, work and play.
With the Carolina STEM Challenge: Emerging Energies Sets I will be able to bring engaging STEM activities into our curriculum with inquiry-based, real-world activities.
Each set focuses on an alternative energy source and presents a challenge that students solve using science concepts and engineering problem-solving skills. I would use these 5 kits to continually challenge students and hone their critical-thinking skills.
