Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a class of 20 energetic and enthusiastic Pre-K students. Our school is a Title I school where most students come from low-income or poverty-stricken homes. All of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Most are English Language Learners while some have special needs. These students come to school eager to learn every day with big smiles on their faces regardless of their circumstances. I want to help these students in every way that I can in order for them to be successful.
We are incorporating a new curriculum this year, which will help to create a more student-driven instructional environment.
For that reason, we are in need of resources and materials to properly utilize the new curriculum in order to help the students reach their goal of developing their skills, and of course, have fun!
My Project
One of the centers in my classroom that the students have a choice to go to is the Cozy Center. It is used for whenever a child wants some alone time or a place to rest. I supply it with feelings dolls, writing materials, books, and some file folder games. It also has a worn-out bean bag chair for sitting. I have noticed the last few years the students rarely go to this center.
This year, I decided to implement some SEFEL (Social Emotional Foundations for Early Learning) strategies I learned at a training.
One of them includes turning the Cozy Center into a "Safe Place" for students to go to if they are feeling upset, sad, or just need some time to themselves. This will offer a place for students to safely be away from others if they feel the need to.
The new bean bag chair will provide comfortable sitting for the students. The sensory toys and books on feelings will offer students different methods to help them find a way to calm down and rejoin the class when they are ready to. The Dr. Seuss storage caddy will keep all the materials together and it goes along with my Dr. Seuss classroom theme. All of these materials that I am requesting will help make the Cozy Center more inviting and will support strengthening their social-emotional skills!
