Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a small town with low socioeconomics. I teach students with varying experiences in school with some needing special education services and others needing gifted and talented services. My students are thoughtful, inquisitive, and eager to learn. They love collaborating with one another through hands-on engaging projects!
It is imperative to differentiate my instruction to reach the needs of all my students.
My students have had to learn to persevere at home as well as at school. As our school was greatly affected by Hurricane Harvey and now the disparities the pandemic has brought on. Despite economic hardship and hardship after a natural disaster, my students come to school each and every day eager to learn.
My Project
My students are very unique as throughout their education they have learned to overcome trauma time and time again. They endured the trauma of the relentless global pandemic that took hold of our nation. Many of my students also suffer trauma at home. School is my students' safe place, and when their homes become unsafe, they look forward to being at school. My goal as a teacher has always been to first and foremost ensure my students are safe and loved at school. I need my students to not only love coming to school but to also connect with their peers and find value in what they are learning. In order to achieve this, I have taught explicit lessons about perseverance. My students know persevere means never giving up. In order to intertwine my philosophy of students loving school and instilling perseverance, an idea was born.
We can create and publish a book about perseverance.
My students are in the process of writing individual stories that will be pieced together to create a class book about perseverance. Students Treasures Publishing has allowed my class to write a book. We are going to publish our class book with the theme of aliens learning to persevere in a short story, each student has created their own alien from their imaginations and written a story about it learning to persevere.
I want my students to really connect to their story and find value in what they are creating. That’s Where Budsies comes in. Budsies is a wonderful company that takes a child’s 2D drawing and turns it into a 3D stuffed animal. I want each of my students to have a customized budsie that is created after the character in the story they wrote that learns to persevere.
