Mrs. Hawes from Pleasant Hill CA is requesting instructional technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Making Sense with Sense Hats

My students need Sense Hats to use with their Raspberry Pi computers, so that they can find more relevance to programming and customizing their programs using Python.

My Students

My students are innovators and creators. With the introduction of 3D design software and lessons, they have started pushing themselves to create models and assemblies they could not have even imagined a few months ago. It's a magical process, and they don't even realize how much they're learning!

Our students have shifted in many ways from being consumers of education to becoming creators, and visitors walking through our halls would see students collaborating on projects, discussing best practices for the choices they have, giving and receiving feedback, and more.

Students walk into classrooms with a variety of tech tools available to them now, and they are learning to synthesize their learning into interesting and fun products and demonstrations of mastery.

Our 850 students range from grades six to eight, and we serve a variety of students with special education needs and who are at different stages of English language learning.

My Project

My students are learning to program in Python using Raspberry Pi computers. They are able to run programs, but don't yet see the connection between programming and solving a problem.

The Sense Hats, added on to the Raspberry Pi computers, allow them to measure a variety of features such as temperature, orientation, humidity, and more.

There is an LED grid as well on which they can display their data or even create art and art slideshows.

There is such a drive to add computer science to education, but finding ways to make the curriculum matter to students is important. Using tools that students can create with and solve problems with is one way to make this relevant.
