I teach at a phenomenal school in beautiful Sarasota, Florida. Through our Responsive Classroom teaching approach combined with our character development called C.A.R.E.S. (Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy, Self-Control), our class is full of enthusiastic to learn and compassionate 6 and 7 year olds. Seeing a student step up to help another classmate in need is a common everyday occurrence for us.
First graders reach incredible and memorable milestones during their school year-from learning to read, mastering basic mathematics (addition, subtraction, telling time, money), to gradually increased life skills and responsibilities.
The curiosity to learn new concepts combined with their spark of never-ending interests makes teaching first graders truly a rewarding experience!
My Project
Through my nine years as a Kindergarten then First Grade teacher, I have observed how important it is to incorporate technology into my classroom. Having technology tools available for these young learners not only provides a whole new world of resources to learn from, but also inspires and encourages learning!
Being a first grade classroom in the 21st century, infusing educational technology into learning is crucial to fostering forward thinking minds.
Part of the Florida Teaching Standards for first graders is to become familiar with utilizing technology as a source to learn from. Besides using tablets for educational reading and math learning apps, my first graders are taught how to use technology to conduct simple research for science and social studies' projects! Wait...first graders can research facts?! They can and they love to! They discover amazing facts that they enjoy sharing with others. An added bonus-during researching, the students are practicing their reading and writing skills. For internet safety reasons, students are supervised while on such technology and are limited to only the teacher tested and previously approved apps and educational websites.
I am requesting three Samsung Tab A Android Tablets (with protective cases) to provide more opportunities for students' access to technology. Our current tablet is one older iPad that is becoming obsolete in it's operating system. Thus, it is slowing down/not working on needed educational apps which causes frustration with my young learners. It also becomes challenging during small reading and math groups when there are not enough technology devices available for each groups' members. Being able to provide my students with three additional tablets will ease my students' frustration with technology and will continue to promote a love for learning.
