Through my nine years of working with kindergarten and first grade students, I frequently notice how challenging it can become for these young learners to focus on controlling their bodies AND learning at the same time. Upon learning of the "flexible seating" option for classrooms, I experimented with 1 single shared wiggle cushion throughout my classroom. I noticed a significant difference in the students' attention abilities who shared and used the single wiggle cushion. Two daily challenges I commonly see in my first grade classroom are maintaining focus and encouraging proper posture of my students as I teach them daily through individualized small group lessons. These young learners often will slump down/lean over in their chairs. Not only are these students practicing incorrect posture and body control, but also it becomes difficult for them to read/see the words in a book by being slumped down/over in their chairs. Some students have challenges with maintaining their self-control over their bodies during our small group lessons while seated in a stationary "traditional" chair, and thus become off task and unfocused. Providing these 6 and 7 year olds a seating option which allows them to safely move, yet stay in one area, will greatly increase their attention and efforts. Besides utilizing the requested seats during our small groups instruction, students will also be provided the opportunity to use the donated seats at their personal desks during whole group lessons. Having this project fulfilled not only benefits my current first graders, but also future students of mine as well.
