My Students

Teaching young children is a big job and doing it in a city where the needs are high but the budgets are low makes it even more challenging. I love teaching my second graders but feel bad when they don't have the little extras that make the day and learning more fun than just sitting and doing worksheets.

My students are creative, enthusiastic children who have lots of energy and need to learn in an environment that suits their individual needs.

These students are learning to become proficient readers and love experiencing new learning on a daily basis, but they still have challenging circumstances to overcome as most of them live below the poverty level, and some are learning in a new language. I want them to learn in an environment that is fun, neatly organized and has the little extras that make school a place where they want to be every day.

My Project

Our classrooms have hard, cold floors that the students do not want to sit on. I tried buying my own carpets and carpet squares to solve this problem but they are not fire retardant so I had to get rid of those. Regular books shelves work great for big kids and libraries but in a classroom where little kids want to pick out just the right book they need a bit more organization to do that.

Now my students will have a wonderful, organized book shelf and a warm, soft place to sit to read, learn and listen to stories!
