I am a fourth-grade reading, writing, and social studies teacher at a Title I school in Virginia. We are a Pre-K through 8th grade building. Nearly 900 students call our school their "home." Between my two classes, I teach nearly 50 students, including students receiving special education services, English Language Learners, as well as gifted learners.
For many of our students, school is more than just a place to learn, but a source of stability and nurturing.
Some of our students have been through more in their young lives than most adults. Norfolk is home to the largest naval base in the world. Many of our families are part of the military, which means that many of our students have to deal with one, or even both, of their parents, being on deployment for long periods of time.
My hope is to provide the students with a safe and fun place to learn! Over the years, I have worked very hard at turning our classroom into our "Home Sweet Classroom!"
My Project
What does activism look like to a child? How do we teach them to stand up for what's right, speak up against social injustice, and equality? John Lewis said, “There comes a time when you have to say something, when you have to make a little noise, when you have to move your feet.” We must help our children understand that their ideas and values are worth standing up and fighting for. It is time for them to stand up and make some noise!
The books in this project will help students understand what it means to show up, speak out, resist, and persist on behalf of our own beliefs.
Our children need to see that they have a voice and allow them to use that voice for change. These books will be used during our morning meeting to hold discussions about current events and our emotions, as well as reading lessons throughout the year.
