Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are blind and visually impaired. They attend school on a regular elementary campus in Anaheim and are in general education classes with their sighted peers for most of the day. They are typical kids in every other way; they just don't see very well. They work really hard to do everything their sighted peers do; they just do it a little differently. They receive a great deal of kindness and assistance from others, and I try to teach them to be appreciative as well as to look inside and find a way to give of themselves to help others. It is important for them to learn just how capable they are, how much they have to offer and to understand the value of giving back to the community. Walt Disney once said, “People look at you and me to see what they are supposed to be. And, if we don't disappoint them, maybe, just maybe, they won't disappoint us.”
My Project
Literacy and technology are the two areas key to the success of visually impaired students. They are also the best predictors of future employability, so we make them a focus every day.
Accessible multi-track recording equipment will allow my visually impaired students to record themselves reading for fluency practice as well as to narrate original stories and eventually to produce their own podcasts.
They will be able to read aloud stories that they have written, add music and sound effects and fully produce a professional-quality finished audio product. The USB audio interface will allow them to send audio, digital and musical information to a computer where they can edit it using accessible software.
