Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a TK-8 school in the heart of East Oakland, opened after a design team of educators, parents, and community members spent a year re-envisioning the school’s mission.

Our current students have significant social and emotional needs, stemming from indirect and direct trauma they have experienced.

Our student population is 82% Latino and 15% African American and a growing number of students from Southeast Asian and the Middle East. 98% of our students identify as low income (from the current SPF snapshot).

Our school started a Dual Language program last year. My current students will be the second generation of bilingual and bi-literate students in our community.

As they participate in our program, they will show cross-cultural competency, the ability to interact with a variety of people, across cultural and linguistic boundaries, and collaborate successfully.

They will graduate proficient in both languages, thus increasing their opportunities to enter college and embark on a successful career.

They will also engage in multiple leadership opportunities each year that will support them becoming social change agent as adults.

My Project

During the two years that I have been teaching in my classroom, I have noticed that there are some materials that would make my students' days (and mine) more effective and productive.

We need seats sacks for storage, earphones and toner for our printer.

With the materials that I have placed on this list, we would have much quicker transitions, and we will be able to use the school computers and benefit from digital resources during workstations time. Also, it will make my job much more easier and effective, since I could be using a printer in my classroom, and would not have to depend on the one in the staff room (which is usually malfunctioning or busy!).
