Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach English to sophomores and seniors in an inner-city, low-income public high school. My school does not have the best library, so I rely on my classroom library to supply my students with high-interest books. I believe that a foundation in literacy will prepare my students for college and a well-balanced meaningful life.

As the budget situation gets worse, I know that my district will not be purchasing new books for my classroom library. Thankfully, I've received nearly one hundred new books from donorschoose.org for my classroom. But I have a new problem. The books are so popular that they are quickly becoming tattered due to heavy use.

We need to protect our classroom books! Libraries cover their books' dust jackets with plastic and put laminating material on their paperbacks to prolong the books' lives. We need to do the same thing in my classroom. We need a supply of book laminating and organizing materials to keep our books in use for many years.

Heavy use of books is a good problem for an English teacher to have. It means the kids are reading. But the care and money that donors have given to our classroom library will be short-lived if the books fall apart from such heavy use. You will make it possible for many future classes of students to enjoy these books again and again.
