Making Myself With Model Magic: Cultural Identity Art Therapy!
Help me give my students Crayola modeling clay as art therapy supplies to help students sculpt themselves! Students will express and embrace themselves and their cultural identities as we celebrate and exploring Black history, during and beyond February.
Our Title I funded school, located in Bergen County, New Jersey serves a culturally diverse group of students from ages pre-k through fifth grade. Our school serves just under 500 students, with more than a third of students being from low-income households. Many of my students come from various home life dynamics, such as non-nuclear families. Our students work hard and they love to explore, discover and learn. It is always a pleasure to work with such wonderful students and their families.
My Project
This project aims to celebrate and explore Black history, during and beyond Black History Month the month of February! During the month of February, school counseling students have been learning and having meaningful discussions about black history and experiences. As a school counselor in a diverse community, it is important to educate our students in these areas. After learning about black history and experiences, students will reflect on what they have learned. Students will then have the opportunity to learn more about their own cultural and self identities as they complete art therapy projects regarding their own race, culture and ancestry. This experience will help students learn more about black history, themselves, others, and further their understanding of equality and acceptance for all - all in a fun, creative way that will stick with them throughout the years.
Cultural awareness and tradition play important roles in helping young children develop a positive sense of identity and build self-esteem.
This project incorporates art therapy to navigate these areas of cultural identity. Therefore, this project requests various Crayola modeling clay materials to be used as art therapy supplies in order for students to sculpt themselves! Students will express & embrace themselves and their cultural identities together as we celebrate and exploring Black history, during and beyond February, Black History Month!
