Making Music with Children with Multiple Disabilities

My students need a variety of easy to hold and play instruments such as maracas, boomwhackers, bells, and drums.

A class of 16 unique and wonderful children love music and movement. My classroom serves 16 children aged 3-6 with multiple disabilities, most of whom cannot walk or talk. My school is a charter school in a high-need community designed specifically to meet the unique needs of this population.

Music is motivational for the children in my class and during music they show skills them may not demonstrate any other time of the day. I incorporate music and singing throughout the day, but have only a few instruments to share with my students.

We need enough instruments that each child can participate with an instrument during music and singing. Playing instruments helps my students meet many of their goals. Nearly all of my students have goals related to grasping; holding an instrument is a very motivating way to practice this skill. When my students have bells on their wrists or ankles they are encouraged to move their arms or legs. Music is magic for my students!
