Boomwhackers are sets of colorful tuned plastic tubes that produce a specific pitch when struck on a hard surface. They can be played individually like a hand bell or like a xylophone when laid in order of the musical scale. I am hoping to acquire Boomwhackers for our school choir. Located in a “low wealth” district, our school receives $800/pupil less state funding than the district located ten miles west. We have no art, no general music, and no P.E. teachers in our elementary school where 35% of the students qualify for free lunches and 27% speak a second language at home. Despite mounting research that demonstrates the benefits of music education, barely one out of five students will receive any during their entire K-12 school career. Concerned and dedicated teachers donated their time and expertise to create an after school choir of seventy five 1st through 5th graders. With Boomwhackers, students can create harmonious (and humorous) accompaniment in performances that the audience of classmates and parents are sure to enjoy. These fun and unique instruments never grow obsolete, require tech support, catch viruses, or crash, and will serve generations of school families.
