My Students

I have my U.S. History students make National History Day projects every year. It requires the students to do research and then plan how to demonstrate knowledge through presentations. I would like to have display boards that we could use from year to year as this would save resources.

My students are typical inner city students in an urban environment.

I teach a group of students who want to go to college but do not have the resources for projects like National History Day that their suburban peers do. These students want to be given the chance to prove that the are better than what the grade for their school is. National History Day is one way for them to do this. Gathering resources that the students can use from year to year would help them to prepare high quality projects and allow them to compete successfully against anyone. All they want is what everyone else takes for granted.

My Project

National History Day requires students to research a topic in history and then to demonstrate their knowledge and research in various formats. Students will be using the display boards to create museum-style exhibits. Those exhibits will then be judged by members of the community. This allows them to learn a historical topic in depth and allows them to have the experience of positive interaction with members of the community as they defend their projects and their research.

Most of my students do not have the opportunity to interact in a positive way with members of their community.

By providing these materials for students to make their displays it increases the positive results when they successfully complete their projects.
