Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine how motivated students would be if they could create their own movies to show what they have learned in school? I would like to give my second graders this exciting opportunity.
My school is located in a lower socioeconomic area of Los Angeles.
Most of my second grade students are classified as English Language Learners and are reading below grade level. Even though they struggle with learning English, my students are highly motivated to improve their reading and writing. We have a couple of computers in the classroom, but all of them are too old to run the iLife programs such as iMovie, iPhoto, and GarageBand that now come with every Apple computer. The computers also are not able to go on-line.
My Project
With our current computers my students cannot access the internet, even though our classroom is wired. When I want to show my students something on the computer they all have to gather around one computer.
I am requesting a MacBook Pro laptop and video cables. This computer will allow my students to conduct internet research. When my students have completed a unit of study in language arts, science, social studies, or even math, they will be able to create short movie presentations in iMovie, which comes with the computer. Students can use the built-in webcam and PhotoBooth program to take pictures of themselves for their projects. Since the computer is portable, the students will be able to take it to their desks, making group work easier. Also, by using video cables to connect the laptop to the LCD projector that we already have in the class, I will be able to display lessons, student work, demonstrations, PowerPoint presentations, and other projects for the whole class to see.
With your support my second graders will be able create meaningful projects that demonstrate what they have learned in our various units of study.
You will be empowering my students to utilize cutting edge 21st century technology, which the overwhelming majority can not access at home. Thank you.
