This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have two math classes and a Science class, that share space in my current classroom. My students are bilingual and bicultural and are learning to navigate two cultural realities. They are mostly sons and daughters of immigrants and they are growing confident in their mathematical abilities.

My classes, consisting of about 63 amazing students, are full of positive energy, big hopes and dreams.

The students are amazing yet have some difficulties in focusing in on the content. There are some students with special needs as well, who in particularly, have difficulty focusing and staying engaged.

My Project

I want our 5th grade classroom environment to be conducive to open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. Comfortable seating options encourage students to focus on their learning while practicing self awareness. I want to provide my students with a range of seating options like yoga balls, stools, floor and traditional seating in order to increase student motivation.

These flexible seating options will provide children with short bursts of physical activity which has been shown to increase more on-task behavior.

Students will be able to use excess energy, increase oxygen to the brain, improve core strength, and posture. We will also have daily discussions about how their seating options encouraged or hindered learning in order to create self awareness.
