This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students reside in the La Puente area and are mostly underprivileged youth in grades 7-12 trying to regain credits in order to graduate from high school.

I work with students in a restorative setting after they have violated the California education code.

These are the students at the highest risk for dropping out or being involved in future crimes. Students stay an average of 3-5 days with us and then return to their home schools with strategies for success.

What I love about teaching these suspended students is showing them how to own and recognize their behaviors that led to their suspensions in a caring environment that involves peer circles, one-on-one counseling, and reintegration activities that connect back to their home schools. I get to know students from all over the district and know that the short time spent here in our program can make a difference in their lives. My students struggle with drug use, anger management issues, broken homes, poverty, depression, and related mental health issues. I love helping the students with any classwork they bring in as well so they can focus on their academic goals and issues.

My Project

As students return to school after the Covid pandemic, they need something outside of the classroom to motivate them to move and socially connect at a safe distance. My students stay in the same room and in the same chair for 6 hours due to being in the suspension program with only a couple of short breaks. Badminton doesn't require too much physical effort, yet will offer students the chance to get on their feet and move during their lunch break as they serve the shuttlecocks over the net.

Badminton will be a new lunch activity during the ATS program to promote physical, social, and mental health and well-being.

Many of our students who come to the ATS suspension program are desperately in need of better academic and social skills. Badminton promotes friendly individual or paired competitions at a safe distance which makes it the perfect activity.
