Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are remarkable. They are dreamers and doers. They are bilingual and multilingual superheroes that give me the greatest joy when teaching them. They restore my hope for humanity and remind me of our collective power as teachers and learners to positively impact our communities.
The purpose of this project is to have a seamless way to document memorable moments together.
April 8, 2024 was a day I won’t forget and believe many students won’t either. I arranged for us to view the solar eclipse together; it was a magical educational life moment. Although I documented the moment with my own personal cell phone camera, this shared experience made me think it’d be powerful to teach, empower and enable my students to do it themselves too!
Being a teacher of English to speakers of other languages, I am fortunate for being able to work with a wide variety of learners. I teach newcomers at the beginning stage of acquiring English up to more advanced students, who are fine-tuning skills and learning the nuances of English. Given that my certification is K-12, I truly do teach across grades. Currently I’m privileged to teach grades K-6 and in the summer I’ll work with grades 7-12 in different public school programming. I mention all of this to say that these materials will be cherished, not only in the classroom to support creative but more traditional in-school lessons but also out of school extracurricular moments too.
I imagine students photographing images that represent a word or theme like: cooperation, empathy, mindfulness and then write/present/share out about their selection. I imagine having students hold roles like daily photographers where they must capture students demonstrating agreed upon norms or being remarkable. The opportunities for usage are many, the first step is acquiring the materials!
