Imagine not being able to have your parent attend most events during your school years. Due to high deployment rates, many of my students are proud of their accomplishments in school even though they know at least one parent will never be able to be a part of those memories.
Our school is an elementary school located on a military post.
Our students move frequently from military base to military base. It is not uncommon for students to attend multiple schools in multiple states and even countries during their elementary education. Our students have a quest for information. They are drawn to nonfiction books and locating more information especially on military equipment and locations with military bases.
My Project
In the last few years, I have set up a blog for students to stay in touch with each other when they move to another location. The students love the use of technology to stay in touch with each other. I have also set up a private YOUTUBE account for parents to check in on video clips for performances held at school. Through this account parents who are deployed can have a short clip of events in their students lives. With the use of these flip cameras the students will be able to record events throughout the school year. We will be creating a student council in the coming school year. It is my dream that these students will be first in using the cameras to record events at school and post them for viewing by deployed family members. I believe it is important to empower students and these cameras are just the ticket. They will be able to share what they feel is important. I also plan to use the cameras to create projects incorporating classroom and information literacy standards.
These flip cameras will become a missing link.
Our students will now be able to share events in their lives with parents who are deployed and fighting for our freedom but missing out on the lives of their children.
