Making Math Visible in Second Grade

Help me give my students hands-on math manipulatives—like base-ten blocks, clocks, coins, number lines, and cubes—to help them understand place value, time, money, and addition and subtraction through meaningful, real-world practice.

My Project

I love that my second graders are curious, enthusiastic learners who are eager to explain their thinking and make connections to the world around them. They learn best when they can touch, move, and see math in action. Hands-on experiences help them build confidence, especially as math concepts become more complex.

The resources in this project will give my students the tools they need to make sense of big ideas in second grade math.

Base-ten blocks and place value tools will help students read, write, and represent numbers up to 1,000, as well as add and subtract using place value strategies. Number lines and dry-erase boards will support comparing numbers, solving word problems, and explaining thinking in multiple ways.

Student clocks will help children understand time to the hour and half hour, while realistic play coins will allow them to practice counting money and solving real-life math problems. Connecting cubes, counters, and array tools will support equal groups, even and odd numbers, and early multiplication concepts. Geometry and fraction tools will help students explore shapes and learn how to partition them into equal parts.

With these hands-on math manipulatives, my students will be able to engage deeply, collaborate with peers, and build strong foundational math skills that will support their learning all year long.
