Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever felt like the one kid in class who doesn't "get it". Well I have about 25 6th Graders at my middle school who feel this way about Math and by age 12 have decided they don't like Math. I want to change that perception and show them they can be successful at Math.
6th Graders who have fallen behind in Math and have started to believe they are not good at Math; therefore, Math is starting to become their enemy in their own minds.
Fortunately, they are not completely lost. My students want to succeed and just need more positive experiences in Math and to be able to work at a pace that fits their learning style and ability.
My Project
Imagine a classroom full of 12-year-olds who HATE Math sitting with their peers engrossed in solving math problems and practicing their fluency in multiplication and division. You might even catch a few of them smiling and laughing. During my regular 6th Grade Math class, I often find myself very frustrated that I am not able to provide enough support to the students who struggle the most with Math. Fortunately, I have the opportunity to have these students in an intervention class next semester and I want to create a fun and rigorous math environment for these students. Where they can have consistent success in Math and build their confidence and dexterity in their Math skills and abilities. These rich standards based activity books will help support my students at the level they need to build up their fluency in Math and improve their overall Math problem solving expertise.
Right now, all of the students that will benefit from these Scholastic activity books are at least 2 or 3 grades behind in Math.
As their teacher, I cannot let these students continue to fall behind or even stay behind. My goal is to use these workbooks in combination with online resources and instruction to bring these students up to grade level. More importantly, I want these students to leave my class believing they can do math and enjoy doing math.
