This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Practice makes perfect." When it comes to math, this adage needs to be modified to, "Perfect practice makes perfect." My kindergarten students need instant feedback as they learn new math skills so they can build a strong educational base for future learning.

I have the pleasure of teaching at a small neighborhood school in central California.

Most of the children walk to school, as we have no school busing system. The families I serve are hard-working folks who want the best for their children. While we speak only English in our classroom, many of the children speak Spanish, Punjabi, or Vietnamese at home. The children have living situations as varied as they are. Some live in nuclear families, some with single parents, others with foster parents, and others with other family members. We have military families in our classroom, in addition to firefighters, and oilfield workers. While we come from diverse backgrounds, we are united in our desire to learn!

My Project

When my students are learning a skill, it is imperative they get feedback to ensure they are learning correctly. Hot Dots Jr pens and cards are designed to support early learners as they practice new skills. There are several sets of cards focusing on many math skills in addition to phonics skills. The children simply select a card and touch the black dot next to the answer of their choice. Instantly, the pen provides a tone indicating whether the answer selected is correct or not. This immediate feedback is invaluable as my students practice new skills. In addition to Hot Dots Jr, each child having his/her own magnetic ten frame card will greatly increase understanding of numbers. The children can physically add counters to the frame to represent numbers. Once they are finished, they can hold their board above their heads without the counters falling off. Having these resources will make learning both meaningful and fun.

As a kindergarten teacher, I have the Herculean task of preparing my students for future learning.

The addition of Hot Dots Jr and a class set of magnetic ten frame boards will certainly help ensure my students begin their educational journey fortified for the challenges of future math concepts.
