Making Math Meaningful With Manipulatives

My math students need play money, geometric solids, unifix cubes, transparent counters, red and white counters and inchworm measuring blocks.

Math manipulatives are just one way to provide meaningful experiences for our students. I teach first grade in a Title 1 school.

I want to make learning meaningful to all of my students. My students will be learning to add and subtract. I believe they will learn in a more meaningful way if they are able to use hands on counters, which my classroom does not have. My students will be learning to recognize and count money. My classroom does not have any play money for my students to be able to experience counting and exploring with money that looks like real money. My students love to measure objects using rulers. They love the book "Inchworm" by Leo Lionni. They can be provided with a meaningful experience by using the inchworm measuring blocks.

My students need play money such as quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies. Having play money will allow them to be able to have hands on experiences with the play money. They will be able to recognize what each coin looks like and it's name. The students will be able to pretend to buy items with the correct amount of change using the play money. My students also need counters such as unifix cubes, red and white counters, and transparent counters. Having these counters will allow my students to use their hands to add or subtract the counters. This will allow them to be able to touch and visualize what the sum or difference will be to addition and subtraction problems. Using the different counters will help the students have meaningful experiences rather than just adding and subtracting on their fingers or in their heads. When my students measure with the inchworm measuring blocks they will began to understand that rulers are not the only measuring tool you can use to measure with.

Your help will ensure that my students will have hands on meaningful experiences using these math manipulatives. These manipulatives will help make a difference in each of my student's learning.
