I have an amazing group of first graders. They are working hard mastering many things, one of which is English. Most of our students live below the poverty line. Our district is struggling with shrinking funds and growing class sizes.
Families struggle to provide basic school supplies and uniforms for their children.
Teachers are dedicated to providing the best education and opportunities for our kids. We reach deep into our own pockets.
We wish we had deeper ones, but we have some of the lowest salaries in the nation. DonorsChoose.org and similar grants have allowed us to try and give our students the same opportunities as their peers in surrounding communities.
My Project
While I currently have an array of math standards to teach, we do not have actual curriculum to teach those standards. I have found that hands on, concrete work helps first graders understand math concepts more fully. We will use the write and wipe boards during whole group instruction. It will allow me, in real time, to see how students are receiving information.
Geometry is a dimensional subject.
The geosticks and pattern blocks allow students to explore geometry in a dimensional way. The math stamps allow us to produce our own work, produce and solve problems in lieu of workbooks.Fraction tiles and addition puzzles will give deeper understanding to those concepts in fun ways.
