Making Math Larger Than Life

Help me give my students the opportunity to make math larger than life. Students will use pool noodles to construct 3 dimensions models of sine and cosine waves. Projects will be mounted and displayed in the hallways.

My Students

I teach at the same high school I graduated from nearly 20 years ago. Though I live in a large metropolitan area, the community around my school has that small town feel. Most of my students are in advanced math classes, interested in pursuing careers in math and science. They have the ambition and the drive be successful in these careers. We just need help getting the tools. My school is also Title 1, meaning many of my students are disadvantaged and cannot purchase their own supplies that would help them reach their potential.

My Project

Students have been studying the unit circle in trigonometry. This activity will allow students to visualize how sine and cosine become wave functions by measuring the horizontal and vertical lengths at key points on the unit circle. They will cut out these lengths from pool noodles and mount them along an axis creating the visual wave function from the data points.

Hands-on immersive learning is the most effective way to learn a new concept and make crucial connections to standards we have learned earlier in the unit.

By mounting their finished projects in the hallway, they will be taking pride and ownership in their display and have a constant visual reminder of the lesson, furthering their retention of the concept.
