Making Math Fun

Help me give my students the opportunity to learn how to love math.

This project expired on May 11, 2022.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school. Most of my students qualify for free lunch and do not have the money for even the basic supplies.

Due to covid, students are sometimes forced to miss up to 10 days of instruction in school.

My students still strive to achieve success every day, even though most of them were virtual for second grade. These students have had to work very hard to catch up from learning lost last year in order to meet grade-level expectations. I try to give them every advantage that I can to ensure their success.

My Project

Math can be a hard concept for students to understand. Students need as much hands-on practice and manipulatives as possible. In the covid area of teaching, students still need these opportunities.

I want to give them the chance to use fun manipulatives to help them not only learn, but master many of their math skills.

I want to buy the fidget popper squares to help students practice their multiplication facts. Students are learning how to make and read arrays. Students could be shown any multiplication fact from 1x0 all the way up to 12x12. They could create an array using the popper to help them solve their problem. This not only helps students solve multiplication problems, but also allows them to practice arrays. On their state assessment, students are shown an array and expected to pick the multiplication fact that is solved. Now doesn’t this sound like a better way to learn multiplication than flashcards or solving it on paper.

I also wanted to purchase a classroom balance scale. The one that I currently have does not balance correctly. It is hard for students to learn how to measure and compare the weights of items with a balance scale that does not work properly. Students on the state testing will be expected to read the picture of the balance scale in order to answer questions. I owe it to them to make sure they have effective hands-on practice to learn this skill.

I appreciate the assistance with providing my students with these hands-on opportunities to enjoy learning math.
