Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 44 third graders in two dual language classes. All of my students come from Spanish speaking households. They range from students who were born here to recent immigrants. We learn a lot from each other about the different cultures that each student represents.

I teach in a low-income school where the majority of my class receives free lunch.

They come to school ready to learn despite any hardships they experience at home. My students are hard workers who persevere through the tough curriculum and never cease to amaze me with their work. When students use a new vocabulary word in context or show off their new found ability to regroup three digit numbers, I can't express how proud I feel of their accomplishments!

My Project

In my years of teaching, I have observed that hands-on learning is always preferred to paper and pencil. Now that we're learning on computers during the pandemic, my students have been struggling to learn and practice third grade math concepts.

Providing at-home math manipulatives will help my students have fun while practicing the math concepts that we're learning.

My hope is that they'll enjoy math more if they can do activities instead of watching me on a computer screen. I'll be able to teach them lots of different games with the decks of cards. Students will be able to independently practice their multiplication and division facts with their flash cards. The rulers can be used for measurement and art projects.
