This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are from an inner city school and are from low-income families. Our school has a poverty rate of over 96 percent.

Our school serves students in grades pre-kindergarten through fifth grade and provides rigorous academics, fantastic teachers, and a safe learning environment.

The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population. Teachers are expected to deliver excellent instruction in science, math, English, history, and library skills without the requisite tools to teach our students. We aim high to achieve success.

My Project

The majority of my students are living below the poverty level. They have no school supplies to reinforce learning at home.

I am requesting a deck of cards for each of my students so that they can practice their basic facts in a fun way at home.

More than half of my students are struggling math students. Math is difficult because of lack of fluency skills. So many of my students have poor number sense which makes learning new concepts difficult. Work becomes very tedious because of their computation skills. If each child had his own deck of cards to bring home he or she could build fluency by playing various math games learned in class with family members.
