These first grade students come from various backgrounds, where English is not always their native language. We are a Title I school where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Students in this classroom come into school wanting to learn and work hard because school is the safest place for a lot of them.
These students are excited and willing to learn and love working with their hands to create something or solve a problem. Our school is a wonderful place to learn because of the environment created by the staff. We show our love of learning to help foster that in our students.
My Project
I use the math workshop approach to introduce new concepts and skills in small groups in order to give my first grade students frequent feedback.
While I work with a group, other students practice skills they have learned in engaging ways through games and centers.
These tools will help students enjoy mathematics in a more fun and concrete way. The laminator will help me keep math centers neat for years to come. It will also allow students to write on materials with erasable markers.
Meanwhile, another group will use the headphones to participate in math fluency and conceptual learning applications on iPads.
