I teach a class of 25 intelligent, curious, and motivated first graders at an urban STEM school in Connecticut. I integrate our STEM curriculum into all blocks of the day, because my future scientists, engineers, and mathematicians must also be able to read and write! To meet their individual needs, I frequently use differentiated groups. While a portion of the class learns a new math strategy with me, others might be at centers practicing a familiar skill or using an iPad to play a math game. The "Daily 5" literacy block allows students to choose a preferred activity, such as listening to a story, developing their phonics skills, or "buddy reading" with a partner.
