My Students
I teach 7th and 8th grade students in Brooklyn, New York. My students are very curious, sweet, full of energy and inspirational. My students come into school early to read a book to kindergarten students (we call it "buddy system"). When the class starts, they take the responsibility to bring their buddies to their classroom so that they won't get lost in the building.
I love teaching math to both 7th and 8th graders but most of them have difficulty connecting math to real world situations because of lack of supplies and resources.
I would love to utilize wonderful websites like Khan Academy, iXL, etc., in math classes. Some students do not even have working computers or internet at home to practice skills they learned that day. I think the extra supplies and resources will excite and encourage my students to be engaged and make connections better.
My Project
Math education these days emphasize the importance of making real world connections with topics they learn in school. I often struggle with this component because even when students are working on their project and trying to research a topic outside of school, they lack supervision or resources (computer, internet, phone, etc). With the tablets in classroom, students can research and make real world connection on the spot with teacher's supervision.
Projects based on real life examples will help them to make connections with mathematics and broaden their perspectives.
With guided instruction and researching techniques, I believe that my students can achieve something that is greater and amazing.
Every day, I witness potential and possibilities in my students. With these materials, I believe I can help them to maximize their potential and possibilities.
