Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach kindergarten at an elementary school in the Lower East Side of Manhattan that serves a culturally diverse, underprivileged population.
Many of my students have had little or no contact with books before beginning school. I try to make up for that by immersing them in literature and allowing constant opportunities to interact with books in different ways. Books that come with hands-on objects and figurines from the stories are especially helpful in making reading come alive for my students.
If the students come to appreciate and love books in kindergarten, they will carry their passion with them throughout their education.
In order make this dream come true for my students, we will need a collection of books that come with their own sets of hands-on objects and figurines that relate to the stories. Thank you for considering this proposal.
