Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend a K-5 elementary school in a low-income, urban community. Our school has a diverse ethnic population, most of whom are English language learners. Our student population is over two thousand.
95% of our students are English language learners.
I teach general ed, gifted, and special needs students. My students are eager to learn, and they love to create. They are bright, talented, and artistic, and they never cease to amaze me.
My Project
Help me give my students colorful classroom decorations to create a welcoming learning space. After being out of the building for 6 months, the children were excited to come back to school. However, school is not what it used to be, and neither are our students. Only a handful of the students come in on any given day. They are socially distanced, wear masks all day, work on assignments on their devices, and lunch and learn in the classroom. Most of the special teachers have been pulled to teach classroom subjects remotely. Gym, music, and dance are taught via Zoom.
Our students are unhappy and anxious, as evidenced by the fact that they don't speak all day, even to their classmates, and some don't eat or even touch their lunch.
They came back to school with trauma. Many lost parents or other family members to Covid19. Many of our families have lost financial stability and are in temporary housing.
I would like to create a bright and fun learning environment so students can feel safe and warm, and to create a space for the class to have fun, socialize and feel good. The paper is for children to have when they are learning remotely, so we can create art together as a class community when students are at home.
