Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Breakfast is served at 9:00 am in the classroom. Following breakfast our school/work day begins. In the morning we have Language Arts and Writing followed by Math and Science in the afternoon. The curriculum is very rigorous. The end of the school day for students is 3:31.
There are 26 English Language Learners in my classroom 16 girls and 10 boys.
The majority of the students are 5 years old.
Most speak little to no English and have not attended preschool.
For many students this is the their first time writing with a pencil using a scissor and interacting in a group.
They are expected to learn English as well academics. While at the same time, they are learning to share and work cooperatively in a group. About half of the students have no difficulty adjusting, learning and following rules. However, for the other half of the class it is more challenging and often frustrating.
Students develop at different rates. Not all children come to school ready to learn. It can be especially hard for children with no English language skills. These students must be provided many opportunities to use language. The most conducive environment is one that is real, meaningful, and comfortable/fun for the students.
My Project
When I first started teaching kindergarten, it was half a day of play while learning how to socialize, share and play cooperatively in a group. Today, kindergarten is a full day of academics with 20 minutes for lunch and 10 minutes for recess. What used to be first-grade is now kindergarten.
I would set up the All-In-One Kitchen, with the shopping cart, tableware and plastic food in a corner of the classroom, where students can practice and develop their English language skills in a fun, hands-on, non-threatening setting through meaningful social interaction. The kitchen will provide students with the opportunity to use their imaginations, build vocabulary and work cooperatively. Students will imitate real life experiences (IE. preparing food, setting a table, eating with manners, playing restaurant, taking orders and serving and cooking food). Students will increase their language development through conversations with peers in the language center.
My ESL students' will increase their vocabulary knowledge.
Engaging in social play will provide an opportunity for students who are shy, quiet and introverted to interact with other students in a non-threatening way. This will lead to students developing confidence in themselves and lead to increased participation during academic content instruction. Science will be integrated as well. Students will learn about the names of the foods, nutrition, the four food groups and eating healthy.
