I have 26 beautiful Kindergarten children in my classroom--13 English Language Learners and 13 native English speaking students. My students come from inner city homes. They are very thankful for anything they are given. At Christmas I gave each child a coloring book and crayons. One child said it was the best gift she ever got. I save left over cereal, muffins, fruit etc. from breakfast and give it to children bring home--my children are so happy and grateful when there is food left to take home. With little time for play (10 min. recess that is part of their half hour lunch), my students work very hard. What used to be expected at the end of first grade is now expected in Kindergarten. When my students leave me they are reading and writing.
