This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a classroom of 6 typically developing children and 6 children who have identified disabilities ranging in age from 3 to 5 years old. However, we have two other classrooms in our building, one that mirrors mine, and a Head-Start classroom of 17. So, in total we have 41 preschoolers moving throughout the three classrooms working on various projects and learning from all our wonderful staff. Preschool children, in general, are very hands-on and active, and the children we seem to be serving year after year is in need of sensory experiences.
Our school has a population of students that 91% live below the poverty level, and of those, 41% are homeless living in nearby shelters, so we try hard to provide wonderful experiences that will assist the children not only academically, but emotionally and socially.
My Project
We are in need of math activities like the sequencing puzzles, and concrete ways for children to count and have fun. For example the magnetic board that holds two different tracks which children use their problem solving skills to make the track then count the balls they put in the tubes or the disks they run on the track.
We also are looking for ways to play in the sand and build our number recognition skills.
The children love to bury and hide things in the sand and finding shells with numbers on them works to help our math skills.
The magnetic pattern blocks are an extension of classroom materials we already use, and this is a fun new way to build.
The sorting sticks will also be a great asset to build our math skills, as they help the children sort by shape and size, as well as matching quantity to numerals.
