My students need new non fiction books that will address topics that will be discussed in class. They will be able to explore and read with a purpose in mind.
"History is the witness that testifies to the passing of time; it illumines reality, vitalizes memory, provides guidance in daily life..".(Cicero) Some high level learners are reluctant to move forward and expand upon learning, these new books could trigger an interest and guidance towards success.
Our school is located in Western NC, we have a rural based community and resources are sometimes limited.
I teach all varied levels of students and actively try to differentiate for individual needs. The community is still recovering from recent job losses in our area. Money is sometimes tight for our students.
My Project
Students are often involved in gallery walks in which they observe photos from historic time periods or participate in an artifact study. Students observe and study the artifacts and make inferences based on what they have observed. These new resource books can be used in these walks through history, or even inspire students to read/learn more about a specific time period in history. I have found that if you can tap into a personal interest of a student they will experience a much higher level of success.
Think about the high achievement student who is not motivated to do what they can really do in the classroom, they need to be able to find success in school again.
Biographies are a good way to open new avenues to reluctant learners.
