Making History Come Alive Through Film

Watch history come alive on films that students make. I teach 8th grade Pre-AP/Honors American History to about 140 students in a rural southwest Oklahoma town. Our school has 55% of our students on free or reduced meals.

In our area computer technology is lacking. This project has many of my students interested but we don't have the software here that would allow them to create movies of historical content. There are a number of projects that my students do that require them to make a video diary. The students are working on a Civil War project right now where they take scenes, pictures and drawings and do voiceovers to make the video. The problem is, the voice over is done in class and not on film. The voiceover is from the viewpoint of a Union or Confederate soldier. The students are reading out of a journal they have written. We also do the same thing over immigration in the early 1900's, where the students put the life of an immigrant to film, using pictures and voiceovers. This software would really help the students get more involved in the project and allow more students to participate. The projects would be able to be saved to a computer or disk and then shown to future classes.

In order to get this project off the ground we need Microsoft Movie Maker for our computers. This will be the first step in getting this project going. Once we have the software, then we can get the computers updated so that the students can explore and create some awesome projects. This will benefit the students by allowing them to become part of history. Watching students try to re-enact the Battle of Gettysburg, Washington's Crossing and other historic things will only enhance their learning potential.

Your help will ensure that my students have every possible chance to succeed in a class that sometimes is put to the side. We try to get the students involved, but we share one camera and most of my students don't have one to use at home. By funding this project, the students could do all the work at school.
