Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are creative, curious, and resilient. They have been working hard to learn from home and in-person. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic the majority of my students have not seen the school staff in over a year. They miss us, and we miss them.
My Project
The COVID-19 pandemic and the recent winter storm have had negative impacts on my students' mental health and social-emotional learning. Continuous physical separation has made it difficult for schools to connect with children and their families.
This spring, my school is planning a curbside book and resource give-away event.
During the event, I will be giving students bookmarks and books to add to their home libraries. I would like to provide books with themes that will help students cope with their emotions and develop their social-emotional skills. Some books directly explain concepts like growth-mindset or empathy, but novels and stories can also be gateways to social-emotional learning. When students make connections to the emotions of the characters they read about they can gain a better understanding of their own feelings.
