Making Connections - Improving Social Relationships

My Students

We all know younger children that have difficulty socializing effectively and interacting well with their peers. In my job as a school psychologist/counselor I am always looking for fun ways to help my kids learn to take turns, share and cooperate with one another.

I work with a wide variety of students K-5th grade who, for different reasons, experience difficulty maintaining good relationships with other students.

This includes students with ADHD, PDD or Aspergers and/or Autsim, emotional difficulties and learning challenges. These are children who do not pick up on social cues in the ways that most "typically developed" children do. They require direct instruction and explicit teaching separate from the regular ed classroom in order to progress.

My Project

I prefer "real" games versus some of the more therapeutic board games, as these classic games are the ones our students know. Each year I replenish old games and look for newer games to keep the children engaged and active. The children have fun and sometimes don't even know they are learning better friendship skills. It's fantastic!

All children should have the opportunity to learn in the way that best suits them.

Having access to materials, games, prizes and incentives are crucial in terms of assisting them develop more effective social skills. Your contribution to the learning for these children in need cannot be measured.
