Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Creating a commonplace book is a powerful and effective practice for high school students because it promotes active learning, personal engagement, and meaningful reflection. Instead of simply reading or listening, students are encouraged to capture quotes, ideas, and moments that resonate with them and to respond thoughtfully. This habit not only deepens comprehension but also strengthens writing skills and critical thinking. A commonplace book allows students to make connections between literature and their own experiences, helping them take ownership of their learning. Over time, it becomes a portfolio that shows their growth in thought, creativity, and expression. It also builds confidence by giving students a space to experiment with language, tone, and personal voice in a low-pressure format.

To make the most of this activity, students need basic supplies such as a sturdy notebook, pens, colored pencils, glue sticks, scissors, and craftbook supplies like washi tape, decorative paper, and stickers.

These materials allow for a wide range of expression, including handwritten entries, visual journaling, and the inclusion of drawings, clippings, and photos. When students can personalize their books, they tend to take more pride in their work. Providing these supplies or making sure students come prepared helps create a more equitable and organized classroom environment. It ensures that every student can participate fully and express their ideas in ways that are meaningful to them. The tangible, creative nature of a commonplace book makes it a unique and valuable tool in any high school classroom.
