This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help us make "cents" of dollars and cents. My students are having a very difficult time understanding money concepts.

I teach a bilingual 1st grade Collaborative Team Teaching Class in New York.

90% of our school's community are low-income families. The class consists of both English Language Learners and Special Education students. They are enthusiastic children who come to school every day ready to learn the skills that they will need to have bright futures.

My Project

It's important for children to have basic daily life skills such as being able to count money and make change. Materials such as individual packets of paper money and coins, as well as hands-on money activities for use during whole group, small group and individual practice would greatly increase the children's ability to grasp these important concepts. These materials will help them to build the skills necessary to complete daily living tasks such as saving money, and shopping to lay the foundation for financial literacy.

Once students have learned how to count money and make change they can then learn more importantly how to save money, spend it wisely, keep track of it, budget etc.

In essence become financially literate members of society.
