Making Bad Better With Resource Materials!

My students need thesauruses and dictionaries to use during writing workshop.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"You mean I get to keep this?" one student cried as I hand him a thesaurus. "Of course you can," I replied, "this is to make bad better!" When students come to writing workshop they are stuck on words like: bad, good, nice,& sad. By the end of the year description flows from everywhere..

I teach an energetic group of 6th graders at a Title I public school in Chicago, IL!

My classroom consists of 34 students with an array of learning levels. I have 9 English as a Second Language learners who receive services on a daily basis. I also have 3 students who are receiving Special Education consultative services.

My Project

At the beginning of the year my students lack description in their writing! I love when writers add details by drawing pictures in the reader's mind & one way to do that is through the use of writing thesaurus' and dictionaries. After being introduced to Nancie Atwell's approach of using the thesaurus to build vocabulary skills and the dictionary to help with spelling, I was skeptical. After using resource materials into writing every year, I have seen a tremendous growth in writing and conversations. So much that I want them to have their own thesaurus that is three-hole-punched and fits into a binder. The thesaurus' are easy to use & can be kept by the student at the end of the school year. Through the use of writing resources & writing workshop, my students essays have blossomed into beautiful art. Beginning with their 1st draft they add vivid details as they continue drafting their work.

A student example is: The light, faded knock on my door makes my hold my breath.

I hear the door knob turn slowly and the door opening with the same speed. I close my eyes and try to picture something with meaning, truth, reality. Writing and conversation is how we express ourselves! Please help my students become confident writers!
