Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am currently teaching a Geometric Design elective course for seniors with the focus of creating art through the construction of geometric structures through a variety of different techniques and materials.

My students will learn the geometry of architecture designs, particularly of Islamic Art.

The main idea of this project is to recreate designs that students can find in Islamic decoration, such as windows, doors, flooring tiles, walls, pottery. Samples can be found at the Met Museum. They will use compasses and rulers to recreate advanced geometric constructions, with regular polygonal bases, such as of hexagons, octagons, dodecagons, expanded then into patterns and tessellation, typically found in Islamic art.

With the visual impact of the final decoration, students will be able to explore symmetries and transformations involved, particularly rigid motions.

Students will use modular origami to recreate 3D solids, Platonic solids and create their own. They will create designs inspired by parabolic curves, on paper first, then on cardboard with needle and thread. Finally, students will be working on a screen printing project of an original geometric design on fabric to make shirts and/or tote bags.

Students in art or fashion majors will hopefully get some inspiration and apply some of these techniques in their creations. Exploring the geometric properties of these designs could help them find a connection with the real world, especially for those students interested in pursue a career as fashion designers.
