Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students range from very recent immigrants with limited English skills to students that were born and raised in our community. Most of their families speak Spanish at home and very few have parents that attended college.
In fact, many will be the first in their families to finish high school.
My students are quiet and loud, interested in sports and electronics, and enjoy drawing, singing, and dancing. Nearly all of them live below the poverty line, but they don't let that define them. Many have a vision of their future and are working very hard to achieve their goals.
My Project
Many of my students are interested in anatomy or a career in the STEM fields, but the material can be very difficult for some. To make the subject more accessible, I try to provide a variety of ways for students to show me what they know about anatomy. For example, students make models of body parts or cells and then explain the models using academic vocabulary. I assign students to case studies where they must research a "patient" and provide a treatment plan based on their symptoms and test results. My students need Chromebooks so that I can help them research and model making materials that they can use for these projects. Some of my students have access to materials and technology at home, but that access varies considerably.
To level the playing field, I would like to be able to provide the materials and technology they need to use for projects.
