Each day more children are diagnosed with autism. In our school alone we have gone from 6 students to 27 students with autism in the past 3 years. With recent budget cuts we are left with less money and equipment to give these students the support they need for their disability.
Children with autism have many challenges that they face each day. One of the most common challenges is dealing with sensory impairments. Sensory Impairments can cause students to act out when frustrated. It can also be the reason many students shut down and miss many learning opportunities.
In order for these students to participate in school to the best of their ability sensory integration is used. Having a frustrated child walk a balance beam or balance on a rocker board may give them all they need to participate in an educational activity. In a similar manner, a child who may have little feeling in their hands may need to use tactile balls before writing. This will allow them to stimulate the nerves and help them write better. This simple activity can aid in eliminating a behavior of frustration before it happens.
Your help will give several children with autism a better opportunity to learn and aid them in their daily lives.
